In this episode, Delaina, a long-term American ex-pat, and Shinya, a dual Australian & Japanese national talk with Shohsei ODA, a native-born “dosanko” to Hokkaido and drummer for the band the SUNBATHERS. This Washington DC-based indy rock-pop group has over 1.5 million plays on YouTube and 2.3 million Spotify streams..Shinya and Shohsei go in-depth on their “hafu” experiences and the differences between attending a traditional Japanese public school, an Australian school, and the Hokkaido International School.

S1E6- Corona Quarantine, Katakana Words & Tomamu Sea of Clouds

In this special Corona Quarantine short update version of the podcast we talk about stimulus checks from the government, the general feel of life in “lockdown” in Hokkaidō and focus on some fun Katakana words in our language section. S1E4- David Sweetlow @ Freaky Wardrobe Cafe

“Million-seller” singer-songwriter David Sweetlow has a career spanning decades and multiple countries, from his native England, Spain, and now Japan. You may have heard his incredibly poignant latest single, “The Planes Stopped Flying” on the previous episode’s Artist Spotlight. We enjoyed our last “on location” filming (for a while) at the excentric and delicious Freaky Wardrobe Cafe, just east of Sapporo Factory.

S1E2- Share House Living

Due to increasing restrictions from COVID-19, the podcast moves from public spaces to the semi-private study room at Shinya’s sharehouse.

In this first “official” episode, we discuss in depth the pros and cons of living in a share house, something that Shinya is intimately familiar with. Delaina is also learning the ropes of sharehouse living as an outsider as they attempt to film episodes of the podcast from the sharehouse’s shared study space.

S1E1- Fabulous Hokkaido: Hokkaido Ben, differences in US and Japan

In this episode, Delaina, a long-term American ex-pat, and Shinya, a dual Australian & Japanese national explore their different perspectives on life in Hokkaido and their home countries.

This first “trial” episode was filmed at Fabulous Cafe on the east side of downtown Sapporo. The sound quality is a bit lower due to the ambient noise of the restaurant, but the content was so engaging that we decided to keep it for our S1E1 (Season 1 Episode 1).
